Worked example

A €20.00 item with €4.00 postage, no VAT ID, no Offsite Ads, €8.00 materials and €4.00 actual postage:

LineAmount
Buyer pays you€24.00
Listing fee ($0.20 ≈ €0.18)−€0.18
Transaction fee 6.5%−€1.56
Processing 4% + €0.30−€1.26
Regulatory operating fee 1.14%−€0.27
VAT on fees 20%−€0.65
Total Etsy fees (16.4%)−€3.93
Your costs−€12.00
Profit€8.07 (33.6%)

Same costs: break-even at an item price of €10.62, and €18.45 for a 30% margin.

What's different for French sellers

The 1.14% regulatory operating fee is the extra line French shops see. Etsy links it to the cost of complying with local rules such as France's digital services tax. It's charged on the item price, postage and gift wrap, never on buyer tax. On the €24.00 order below it's €0.27, and €0.33 once 20% TVA is added. A German shop selling the identical order pays €3.57 in total fees, so a French shop is €0.36 worse off on every order.

Micro-entrepreneurs: you declare your chiffre d'affaires (what buyers paid you, not what Etsy deposits), and URSSAF contributions are calculated on that figure. Etsy's commissions don't reduce it. So knowing your fee total is about pricing correctly, not about your declaration. If you're in the franchise en base de TVA you won't have an intra-community VAT number, and Etsy keeps adding TVA to its fees.

Etsy reports sellers to the DGFiP under DAC7 once they reach 30 sales or about €2,000 in a calendar year. Keep each month's statement CSV. Not tax advice: ask your expert-comptable.

Want this for every order, not just one?

The Profit & VAT Tracker for Etsy sellers reads Etsy's monthly statement CSV (paste it in) and sorts every row into sales, refunds, each fee type, VAT on fees, Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads and postage labels, then shows profit per month and for the tax year. For EU and UK shops, VAT-registered or not. Excel, and built for Google Sheets. If it doesn't read your statement, you get a fix or a refund.

Questions

How much does Etsy take from a sale in France?

On a €20.00 item with €4.00 postage, a France-based shop without a VAT ID pays about €3.93 in Etsy fees including VAT on fees, which is 16.4% of what the buyer paid (no Offsite Ads).

What is Etsy's processing fee in France?

4% of the order total (including postage and tax) plus €0.30 per order, based on where your bank account is.

Does Etsy charge VAT on fees in France?

If you haven't given Etsy a VAT ID, Etsy adds VAT at 20% (France's standard rate) to all of its fees. Once you're VAT-registered and add your VAT ID, it stops charging VAT on fees and you account for it yourself.

What is the Offsite Ads fee?

If a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on another site and buys within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order (12% once your shop has made $10,000 in a 365-day period), never more than $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out.

How do I work out the price I need?

Enter your costs and a target margin. The calculator searches for the lowest item price where your profit after every Etsy fee (and VAT on fees) reaches that margin, and also shows your break-even price.
